THE ROLE OF TEACHING ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION IN BUILDING COMMUNICATIVE AND RHETORICAL COMPETENCE OF A MODERN PROFESSIONAL

Globalization of the English language, multiculturalism of the modern world have brought building rhetorical competence and performance skills to the fore in ESP/EAP English language curriculum. Making presentations, taking part in debates, meetings and negotiations, as well as self-presenting at job interviews would require speaking accurately and intelligibly in cross-/multicultural settings. Meanwhile, cross-linguistic pronunciation interference causes most of intelligibility problems in oral communication and quite often leads to underestimating non-native speakers’ rhetorical competence. Regarding that, pronunciation competence becomes one of the basic rhetorical competences to be taught to Russian professionals. The traditional approach to teaching English pronunciation by approximating a native speaker accent makes the learning goal unachievable for most of EFL students. Shifting cultural and teaching values from imitating a native speaker variety to forming positive attitude towards a native accent and consequently retaining an L1 speaker identity has made teaching English pronunciation a doable and achievable objective. The talk will focus on the core segmental and suprasegmental pronunciation features, teachable and achievable, that raise Russian learners’ rhetorical competence and ensure intelligibility between them and other English speaking people.
